Big innings lift Scrappers over Spikes

STATE COLLEGE — In a game that saw some big innings, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers defeated the State College Spikes, 9-7, at Medlar Field in Lubrano Park.

The Scrappers (12-4) started the New York-Penn League action with a huge inning.

It all started with a Jose Fermin single and then a Tyler Freeman hit by pitch. On a wild pitch, both players moved up a base. Richie Palacios then walked to load the bases. After another hit-by-pitch, Clark Scolamiero brought in two runs with a single, and the Scrappers eventually took a 4-0 lead. State College (6-11) responded with two runs in the bottom of the first.

Both starting pitchers, Juan Mota for MV and Winston Nicacio, struggled to get outs efficiently. Mota went just 3 1/3 innings, giving up six earned runs and striking out three. Nicacio didn’t record a single out while giving up four runs.

The Scrappers added three more runs in the top of the second inning. Scolamiero came through with a two-run single just as he did in the first inning to push runs across. He finished with a team-high four runs batted in.

State College got close in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs. A three-run double by Brady Whalen was just what the Spikes needed to get close.

Stanley Espinal score in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at seven.

Freeman scored a run in the sixth when he stole home and then a run in the ninth by Freeman helped Mahoning Valley secure the road win.

Tonight’s rubber match is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. in State College.
