MV finally loses

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Well, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers will not finish the season a perfect 73-0.

The Scrappers suffered their first loss of the year, dropping a 4-1 decision to State College on Wednesday.

MV (5-1) struggled at the plate, registering six hits and scoring just one run in the seventh inning. Starting pitcher Juan Mota took the loss, allowing three runs, eight hits while striking out five and walking zero over 4 2/3 innings.

The bullpen kept the Scrappers in the game, allowing only one run and one hit over 3 1/3 innings. MV, which averaged nearly eight runners per game in its first five contests, scored its only run on a run-scoring double by Jose Fermin.

Fermin, who finished 2-for-4, brought in Alvarez Lopez, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning, but that was MV’s only run. Fermin and Elvis Perez, who’s hitting a team-high .600 to start the year, each had two hits. Perez also finished 2-for-4.

The Scrappers return home today for a six-game homestand. They host Auburn at 7 p.m. tonight for the first Buck Night of the season. General admission tickets, hot dogs, sodas and beer are $1.
