Hubbard’s Lowe wins 300 hurdles; Niles’ Clinkscale sets record

CORTLAND — The Trumbull County Track and Field finals were held at Lakeview High School on Thursday. Athletes from a number of various Trumbull County schools competed, and the Hubbard Eagles had a standout in the 300-meter hurdles.

Junior Kaden Lowe flew around the track, leaping over hurdles in a time of 41.73 seconds to earn first place.

“I was really nervous coming into today,” Lowe said. “I looked at the times. A couple of guys had about the same time as me.”

That didn’t stop Lowe from finding a way to come out on top. This is Lowe’s first season running track for Hubbard after coming over from Brookfield.

“I saw my friend from my old school (Brookfield’s Xzavier Witherow),” Lowe said. “He was at the last hurdle mark. He was neck and neck with me. I thought about it, and I just took off. I really want to make it to state. I have to work hard for that. That’s my only goal.”

Hubbard coach Jim Phibbs thinks Lowe can achieve his goal.

“He is definitely our MVP this year,” Phibbs said. “He is a talented kid. He’s a leader. He has a lot more potential. I don’t think we’ve seen his best performances yet. We’re happy to have him on the team. He can most certainly accomplish his goal. He gets better every week and keeps setting new personal records.”

Lowe’s personal record is 41.3 seconds. He also runs the 110 hurdles.

He made it to the finals in the long jump and is part of the 4×400 relay team along with seniors Ryan Laird, Paul Sundy and Gabe Gilliland.

“The coaches really push me hard,” Lowe said. “The team just hypes me up. Basically all day, they just told me that I got this. That really motivated me in the last 100 meters.”

The relay team finished second behind McDonald, who won — the race and the meet — thanks in part to the efforts of senior Eli Street. Street ran the third leg of the race. He fell to the ground, as he was at top speed, while making the pass to his teammate. The Eagles edged out Girard for second place.

“Dom Malito is a key part of that relay team,” Girard coach Kevin Hetrick said. “He won the long jump today. He finished second in the high jump. His sister (Mia Malito) is an outstanding jumper as well.”

Another outstanding young athlete for the Indians is sophomore Sieasia Triplett. Triplett finished second in the 200-meter dash. Her time of 25.59 seconds could have won many 200 meter dashes, but Niles senior Chante Clinkscale set a new stadium record with a time of 24.43.

“Essentially, this is Sieasia’s freshman year,” Hetrick said. “She didn’t get to have a season last year. We’re throwing her into different events and trying to get her into shape. We want to see what she can excel in. She’s really starting to come into her own in the 100 and the 200. Kids want to run reps with her because they know she’s good, and they know it’s going to make them better. In that aspect, she’s a good leader for us.”

Triplett just enjoys the experience.

” I love my teammates,” she said. “The coaches really help me improve. I’m working to make it to state in the 100 and the 200.”

On the boys side, McDonald earned 132 points. Howland finished second with 91. Girard was third with 61.5. For the girls, Howland won with 103 points. McDonald was second with 85, and Lakeview took third with 72.
