Bad weather disturbs softball schedule

Miserable weather conditions on Friday, combined with a poor forecast for today, has prompted a rescheduling of high school softball regional title games.

Four Mahoning Valley softball teams — West Branch in Division II, Ursuline and South Range in Division III and Mathews in Division IV — were scheduled to play today for a berth in their respective state final fours.

West Branch’s game against Richfield Revere has been moved to at 3 p.m. Sunday. It still will be played at Firestone Stadium in Akron, as will the Mathews vs. Cuyahoga Heights contest that is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday.

Ursuline and South Range will face off for the Division III regional title at 2 p.m. Monday at Youngstown State’s softball complex.

State tournament semifinals at Firestone Stadium are scheduled next week on Thursday in Divisions I and IV and on Friday in Divisions II and III. All four state title games are planned for June 5.

The Valley has five baseball teams remaining heading into next week’s regional — Sweet 16 — tournaments.

Semifinals for all are scheduled Thursday, with regional title games set for Friday. The state tournament is scheduled June 10-12 at Canal Park in Akron.

Next week, Canfield and Salem will square off in a Division II regional semifinal at 2 p.m. Thursday at Canton GlenOak. The regional final is scheduled Friday at 5 p.m.

In Division III, South Range faces Gilmour Academy on Thursday at 5 at Massillon. The final is Friday at 5. Burton Berkshire and Canton Central Catholic play in the other semifinal.

Two Trumbull County teams could meet in the Division IV regional title game at Strongsville. Kennedy faces Columbia Station Columbia on Thursday at 1, while Mathews follows at 4:30 against Fremont St. Joseph or Tiffin Catlvert. The championship is planned for 2 p.m. on Friday.
