Howland girls eliminated; Falls boys edge Leopards

GIRLS BASKETBALL

¯ STOW 61, HOWLAND 31: STOW — The Tigers couldn’t skirt Stow’s defense in a loss to the Bulldogs in a Division I sectional matchup.

Courtney Clark led Howland with nine points and Jamie DeSalvo scored eight.

The Bulldogs host Canfield on Saturday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

¯ NEWTON FALLS 59, LIBERTY 58: NEWTON FALLS — The Tigers scored five points in 20 seconds to come back and beat Liberty in the final minute.

With 20 seconds left, Josh Honeycutt split his two foul shots to cut the lead to 58-55. Then, with 6 seconds left, Honeycutt scored off a fastbreak steal to cut the lead to one point. Joey Kline, who scored a game-high 28 points, got another fastbreak steal that led to the game-winning bucket.

Honeycutt added 17 points for the Tigers (12-5, 8-2).

Liberty was led by Jameer Weaver who had 26 points.

¯ JOHN F. KENNEDY 68, HOWLAND 58: HOWLAND — The Tigers fell to 5-15 after a loss to Kennedy.

Cam Hollobaugh led the Eagles with 18 points. TJ Harden scored 15 and Gabe Green added 11.

Jordan Sperling guided the Tigers with a game-high 21 points. Ben Bronson scored 17 points.

The Eagles hit 10 3-pointers in the win.

¯ CHAMPION 67, CAMPBELL 31: CHAMPION — The Golden Flashes had a season-high first quarter with 26 points in a win over Campbell.

Champion (9-6) was led by Austin Willforth who scored 15 points. Trayvon Edwards scored 14 points, Keegan McDermott chipped in 13 and Joey Fell added 12.

The Red Devils were led by Aziyah Flores and Collin Michaels, who each scored nine points.

¯ SOUTH RANGE 54, GIRARD 34: GIRARD — The Raiders kept Girard in single-figures in each of the first three quarters to build up a solid cushion and get the win.

Brandon Mikos led the Raiders with 16 points and Eli Taylor scored 13 points.

Thomas Cardiero led Girard with 18 points and Gus Johnson added 10.

¯ POLAND 43, LAKEVIEW 32: POLAND — With a strong second half, it was Poland who came out on top of Thursday’s battle of the Bulldogs.

Poland outscored Lakeview 21-13 in the second half to pull away.

Ross Dedo led Poland with 18 points and Andrew Centofanti scored 16.

Aidan Popovich and Nate Fox led Lakeview with eight points each.

¯ VALLEY CHRISTIAN 73, HUBBARD 47: YOUNGSTOWN — Valley Christian held Hubbard to 13 first-half points on its way to a big win.

Valley Christian held a 38-13 lead at the break and powered through for the win.

Mark Revere led Valley Christian with 25 points and Sekou Stanley tallied 20.

Riley Heckert led Hubbard with 23 points.

¯ HEARTLAND CHRISTIAN 66, BROOKFIELD 57: COLUMBIANA — The Lions were led by Joey Donofrio in a win over Brookfield.

Donofrio led Heartland Christian with 22 points, and Jonathan Bertovich added 18 points.

Haden Gibson led Brookfield by scoring 19 points. Donovan Pawlowski scored 16 and Isaiah Jones added 12.

¯ WINDHAM 74, MAPLEWOOD 49: MECCA — Bert Jones scored 24 points for the Bombers in a win over Maplewood.

Jones led the Bombers and was followed up by his brother Mikiylen Jones who scored 15 points and Chase Eye who added 14.

Alex Donaldson led Maplewood with 15 points.

¯ BADGER 81, CHALKER 58: SOUTHINGTON — A 27-point performance from Carter Burnett guided the Braves past Chalker Thursday.

Burnett registered the game-high and was aided by Brad Hamilton and Jack Lendak, who each scored 12 points, and Logan Murphy who added 10.

Derek Sherwood and James Stull led the Wildcats with 11 points each.
