Champion, Newton Falls win, advance

¯ CHAMPION 61, ROOTSTOWN 41: CHAMPION — The Flashes had a 23-point third quarter to pull away for a first round sectional victory over Rootstown.

Champion outscored the Rovers 23-11 in the third quarter. Austin Willforth led the team with 17 points. Trayvon Edwards scored 16 and Mason McKinney added 10.

The Flashes move to 11-6 on the year and play Ravenna Southeast in the sectional bracket final.

¯ NEWTON FALLS 63, EAST PALESTINE 21: NEWTON FALLS — The Bulldogs never got on track this season and fell to 0-13 with a 63-21 loss to the host Tigers in the first round of the Division III sectional tournament.

Joey Kline scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Newton Falls (14-5), which clinched the outright MVAC-Gray title Tuesday night as Liberty downed LaBrae in a regular-season contest.

Jordan Dowling added nine points and Josh Honeycutt anf Caleb Howard both chipped in eight. Honeycutt also had three assists, as did Ian King.

Dom Wycoff scored 11 points for the Bulldogs, who trailed 13-0 after one quarter and 41-6 at halftime.

¯ LIBERTY 60, LaBRAE 48: The Leopards scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter to extend a 42-38 lead to 51-38 as they upended the Vikings to knock them out of a first-place tie with Newton Falls in the MVAC-Gray Tier standings.

Both teams have makeup games with Champion remaining, but those may not be rescheduled.

James Davis scored 19 points to lead Liberty (9-8, 7-4 MVAC). Jameer Weaver added 12 points and D’Andre Venters scored 10. Rashad Chambers had seven points and 13 rebounds.

The Vikings (9-5, 7-3 MVAC) were led by Devin Carter’s 10 points.

¯ MINERAL RIDGE 66, COLUMBIANA 50: MINERAL RIDGE — Balanced scoring carried the host Rams past the Clippers.

Jalen Eiland-Royal scored 15 points and Devon Winford and Austin Governor added 12 points apiece for Mineral Ridge (10-12). Jake Sylak, Zach James and Triston Weiss all added eight points.

Nick Millions scored 17 to pace Columbiana (4-19), which trailed 6-8 after one quarter and 35-24 at halftime.

¯ STRUTHERS 72, NILES 35: STUTHERS — The host Wildcats rolled early, posting a 23-8 lead after one quarter and leading 53-18 by halftime as Trey Metzka netted 19 points. Ronnie Leonard added 12 points and Aidan Slocum added nine for Struthers (22-0) in the Division II first-round game against the Red Dragons.

Doug Foster tallied 19 points to spark Niles (1-14).

¯ VALLEY CHRISTIAN 71, MAPLEWOOD 28: YOUNGSTOWN — Valley Christian started the game on a 21-2 run and cruised past the Rockets in a Division IV sectional first-round game.

The Eagles made 11 3-pointers in the game, six in the first half. Sekou Stanley led all scorers with 18 points. He was one of four VIctory Christian players to score in double figures, with Joey Battista (12), Brandon Paige (11) and Zavion Howard (10) also making key contributions offensively.

Connor Steffens paced Maplewood with nine points.

¯ ST. THOMAS AQUINAS 89, CHALKER 61: LOUISVILLE — A 27-point performance by Jordan Kellar wasn’t enough to push the Wildcats past St. Thomas Aquinas in a first round sectional matchup.

James Stull added 15 points for Chalker in the season-ending loss.

Chris Autrey led the Knights with 25 points.
