WGH, Champion girls win; Ursuline boys top Bengals
¯ WARREN G. HARDING 36, NEWTON FALLS 34: NEWTON FALLS — A last-second layup from Diamond Phillips gave Harding the edge in a defensive showdown with Newton Falls.
Phillips led the Raiders (9-0) with 20 points and had six steals. With 1:32 remaining on the clock, Phillips hit the game-tying 3-pointer and with two seconds left, Phillips drove to the lane to score the game-winning basket.
Courtney Hankins led the Tigers (4-3) with 10 points.
¯ CHAMPION 46, CRESTVIEW 34: CHAMPION — The host Golden Flashes overcame a sluggish first half and didn’t seal the outcome until outscoring the Rebels 19-11 in the fourth quarter.
Emma Gumont scored seven of her game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter and Madison Stewart scored five of her seven in the period to lead Champion (3-1 overall, 3-1 MVAC-Gray). Brooke Whitt added 10 points for the Golden Flashes.
Krista Perry scored 16 points to lead the Rebels, who led 10-5 after one period and trailed 14-12 at halftime and 27-23 entering the final eight minutes. Mara Halas added 10 points for Crestview (8-6, 2-4).
¯ FAIRPORT 57, MATHEWS 51: VIENNA — The host Mustangs fell behind 19-11 after the first quarter, matched the Skippers point-for-point in the second and third periods and couldn’t overcome that gap in the final period.
Mathews could not contain Kara Mcadden, who netted 34 points, including six 3-pointers to lead Fairport, which moved to 4-3 overall and 4-2 in the Northeastern Athletic Conference.
Ashley Deans and Mya MacGregor scored 14 points apiece for the Mustangs (3-4, 1-3 NAC).
¯ McDONALD 79, WATERLOO 42: ATWATER — The Blue Devils took down Waterloo in a big league win for McDonald.
Molly Howard led the Blue Devils with 29 points and Sophia Constantino scored 24.
McDonald led 48-16 at halftime after scoring 24 points in each of the first two quarters.
¯ SOUTH RANGE 50, NILES 21: NILES — The Raiders moved to 10-3 on the season after a big win over Niles.
With leading scorer Izzy Lamparty out due to an injury, Lexi Giles led South Range with 15 points. Mallory Vidman and Hannah Crouse each added 11.
Leading for Niles was Maddie Davis, who had nine points.
¯ URSULINE 67, BENEDICTINE 54: CLEVELAND — The Fighting Irish made the trip up to Cleveland and came back with a win after taking down Benedictine Thursday.
Brady Shannon led the team with 21 points. Vinny Faluto and Jakylan Irving each added nine.
Ursuline (8-4) hit 10 shots from behind the arc. Faluto had three and Shannon had two. Five other players each hit one.
