Newton Falls, Liberty post wins; Ursuline is OT winner

¯ NEWTON FALLS 62, URBAN SCHOLARS 42: NEWTON FALLS — The host Tigers improved to 6-1, bolting to a 40-10 halftime lead and cruising.

Joey Kline supplied 13 points and seven rebounds, Josh Honeycutt added nine points and Luke Butler had five assists. The Tigers (6-1) outscored their guests 27-6 from 3-point land.

The Hawks got 18 points from George Peoples and nine from Nick Grier.

¯ LIBERTY 53, BROOKFIELD 48: BROOKFIELD — Liberty took an eight-point, first-quarter lead and held off the Warriors down the stretch of a Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference, Gray Tier clash.

Brookfield tied the game at 48 with just more than 1 minute remaining, but James Davis split a pair of free throws to give Liberty the lead. O’Marion Dawson sank two free throws the next time down the court for a three-point lead and Liberty held on.

Jameer Weaver and Davis each scored 14 for the Leopards (3-2, 3-1), with Davis making 7-of-8 free throws in the fourth quarter to thwart Brookfield’s rally. D’Andre Venters scored 11, including eight in the first quarter, when Liberty took a 19-11 lead.

Haden Gibson led the Warriors (4-2, 2-2) with 13 points. Isaiah Jones added 10 for Brookfield, which outscored Liberty, 13-9, in the second quarter but couldn’t finish the rally.

¯ URSULINE 67, EAST 66, OT: YOUNGSTOWN — Ursuline’s Tyler Beck hit a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime to lift the Irish over East in a Steel Valley Conference thriller.

Beck’s fourth 3 of the game saved the Irish (9-4, 2-0), who squandered a 10-point, fourth-quarter lead and was on the verge of a tough loss before Beck’s heroics. He was one of four Ursuline players in double figures. Demarcus McElroy registered a team-high 14 points, while Brady Shannon matched Beck with 12 points. Terrence Pankey scored 11.

The Golden Bears (2-5, 0-2) trailed 22-8 after the first quarter and 40-23 at halftime. They outscored the Irish, 34-17, in the second half, led by John Clay’s game-high 19 points. Ramir Bledsoe scored 15, Rueben Talley added 12, and DJ Weller put in 10.

¯ CRESTVIEW 45, CHAMPION 42: CHAMPION — The Rebels used a 16-5 fourth-quarter scoring push to rally to a MVAC-Gray Tier victory over the Golden Flashes.

Crestview (4-7, 2-1 MVAC) trailed 37-29 entering the final 8 minutes, but Anthony Cusick made a pair of key 3-pointers and Drake Golden added five of his game-high 16 points in the last period. Cusick finished with 15 points, all on 3-pointers.

Champion (2-5, 1-3 MVAC) got 14 points from Austin Willforth and eight from Keegan McDermott.

¯ POLAND 54, GIRARD 33: POLAND — Poland’s big first half was enough to topple Girard in an NE-8 matchup.

The Bulldogs (9-3, 4-1) led, 30-20, at halftime and held Girard to 13 points in the second half. Poland’s Ross Dedo scored 10 of his game-high 16 points in the decisive first half.

Thomas Cardiero paced the Indians (0-5, 0-4) with 12 points. Gus Johnson added 10 for Girard.

¯ VALLEY CHRISTIAN 73, LISBON 42: YOUNGSTOWN — Mark Revere scored 21 points for the Eagles in a win over Lisbon.

Zavion Howard scored 14 points for Valley Christian with Brandon Paige scoring 11 and Joe Battista adding 10.

Blayne Brownfield scored 26 points for Lisbon.

The Eagles (5-2, 4-1 Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference) outshot Lisbon 10-3 from behind the arc.

¯ SPRINGFIELD 56, JACKSON-MILTON 50: NORTH JACKSON — The Tigers overcame a 26-22 halftime deficit by outscoring the host Rams 17-12 in each of the final two quarters to win the MVAC-Scarlet tilt.

Adam Wharry scored 18 of his game-high 24 points in the second half to fuel Springfield (10-3, 7-1 MVAC). Alex Rothwell contributed 11 points and R.J. Smith had 10.

A.J. Bouch scored 16 points to powered Jackson-Milton (5-6, 3-4 MVAC). Gavin Sahli and Frank Prozy both scored 10.

¯ SOUTH RANGE 66, NILES 37: NILES — The Raiders outscored the hosts 43-14 in the middle quarters to pull away after leading 9-3 through the first quarter of the Northeast-8 contest.

Doug Foster’s 10 points led the Red Dragons (1-4, 1-3).

¯ CRESTWOOD 70, GRAND VALLEY 63: ORWELL — Crestwood’s Trent Jakacki went off for 41 points, including eight points in overtime to lift the Red Devils past Grand Valley.

Jakacki sank 19-of-21 free throws, including 8-of-10 in the extra session to help Crestwood outscore the Mustangs, 13-6. Jakacki scored 20 points in the first half.

Three player scored in double figures to power a balanced Grand Valley squad. Nate Boiarski led the Mustangs with 15. Ashton Zupancic and Hogan Hejduk added 14 each.
