Harding in 1st district title since 2000

For the first time since 2000, the Warren G. Harding girls basketball team is playing in a district title game.

The Raiders play tonight in the first of six district championship games that will involve 10 area teams. The title game winners advance to regional games — Sweet 16 — next week.

Harding, the No. 1 seed, faces No. 2 Stow-Munroe Falls in their Division I title game tonight at 7 at Ravenna High School.

Other district championships, all on Saturday:

Division II at Austintown Fitch — No. 1 seed West Branch vs. No. 2 Poland, at 7 p.m. Poland is the defending district champ, while West Branch has appeared in the D-II district title game at Fitch for eight of the last 10 years.

Division III at Lakeview — No. 1 seed Champion vs. No. 2 Garfield at 1 p.m. The Golden Flashes are the defending district champs.

Division III at Struthers — No. 2 South Range vs. No. 4 Crestview at 7 p.m. The Rebels knocked off top-seeded Liberty in a district semifinal.

Division IV at Mineral Ridge — No. 1 McDonald vs. No. 2 Western Reserve at 4 p.m. The two split a pair of regular-season games. WR won this title game matchup a season ago.

Division IV at Grand Valley — No. 4 Bristol vs. No. 2 Cornerstone Christian. The Panthers knocked off rival Maplewood, the No. 1 seed, after the two split a pair of regular-season games.

Regional games next week are at the Canton Civic Center in Division I with semifinal games scheduled Tuesday and the final on Friday.

Division II teams play at Barberton on Tuesday and Friday, Division III is at Cuyahoga Falls on Wednesday and Saturday and Division IV teams will play Thursday and Saturday at Massillon Perry.
