Atkinson leads Brookfield boys golf in 1st round

Brookfield’s Justin Atkinson shot a 1-under 71 on the Ohio State University Scarlet Course in Columbus to lead the Division III boys golf state tournament by one stroke over Crooksville’s Owen Carney, who shot an even-par 72.

The Warriors, who have made state for the fourth straight year, shot a 323 to stand in fourth place after the first day of the tournament.

Atkinson, a senior, is looking to be the area’s first male medalist since John F. Kennedy’s Ryan Fowler won the D-III title in 2014.

Brookfield’s Conner Stevens is tied for 10th with a 5-over 77, while Jake Shingledecker is tied for 11th with a 6-over 78. Kenny Montgomery had a 25-over 97, while Cameron Wellman shot a 29-over 101 for Brookfield.

Newton Falls’ Brandon Gibson is tied for 29th with a 12-over 84. Columbiana’s Tyler Anderson shot a 6-over 78 to be tied for 11thI.

Cardinal Mooney’s girls are sixth after the first round of their Division II state tournament at the OSU Gray Course with a round of 345.

Alexandria Patrone, who is tied for 24th place, shot a 12-over 82. Jayne Bernard (16-over 86), Alyssa Rapp (17-over 87), Grace Ogden (20-over 90) and Daniella Patrone (51-over 121) were the other Mooney golfers.

Marlington and Lima Central Catholic are tied for first at 318.

West Branch shot a 352 for 10th place in the Division II boys tournament at NorthStar Golf Club in Sunbury. Nick Pidgeon leads the Warriors with an 8-over 80, tied for 23rd place. Aiden Wiesemann had a 14-over 86, Brett Blickensderfer added a 20-over 92, Garrett Harvey carded a 22-over 94, while JD Brain added a 26-over 98.

Play in all three golf tournaments ends today.

District tennis

All the area Division II girls tennis players and doubles teams at the Akron District tournament lost in the first round on Friday.

In singles, Lakeview’s Laura Garvin fell to Orange’s Alexis Nyborg, 6-0, 6-2; Struthers’ Daniella Mendel lost to Hawken’s Carly Cohen, 6-0, 6-0; Ursuline’s Lanna Dellick dropped two against Orrville’s Claudia Adcock, 6-0, 6-1; and Cardinal Mooney’s Marissa Landers lost to Canton South’s Destiny Winans, 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, Poland’s Ally Andrews and Adeline Schweers lost to Triway’s Emily Allison and Kirsten McAllister, 7-5, 7-6; Kennedy’s Caitlyn Condoleon and Sophia Zamarelli dropped two to Hathaway Brown’s Ally Mills and Alex Wolf, 6-2, 6-4; Ursuline’s Anna Morgione and Emma Thornton lost to Revere’s Morgan Dobos and Maddie Kavenagh, 6-1, 6-1; and Struthers’ Renee Leonard and Emily Vo lost to Orrville’s Abby Adcock and Sydney Adcock, 6-0, 6-1.

Today, Canfield’s Anna Kan, who qualified for state for the second straight year in Division I, plays Rocky River’s Samantha Robertson in a district semifinal. The semifinals, finals, third- and fifth-place matches are for seeding at state in Mason.

Boardman’s Ava Valko faces Magnificat’s Audrey Smitek in a match to qualify for state and advance to the a fifth-place match.
