Lineman leading Warriors as senior

Ethan McWilliams

Leaders come from every area of a team.

For the Brookfield football team, one of their big leaders is senior Ethan McWilliams, who plays on both the offensive and defensive lines for the Warriors.

McWilliams has one goal for his senior season — to make the playoffs.

“I just want to go to the playoffs, I’ve never been able to go to the playoffs, so I’m hoping this will finally be the year, to just go out and do as best as we can,” he said.

He also sees some big differences between last year’s squad and this season’s team.

“We’ve definitely worked a lot harder than before I think,” he said, “and we have a lot more people that played last year, returning starters, than what we did from years before. I think that’s going to help us a lot this season.

“There’s a lot of nerves the first time playing and so most of those are already gone for a lot of kids that were playing. It’s going to help them with everything, even like special teams and stuff because there are kids starting to come up on there, so I think it’ll help them everywhere they play.”

Coach Randy Clark views McWilliams as one of the key pieces on the Warriors’ roster.

“Ethan is a very quiet kid, but his actions and his work ethic speaks for itself,” Clark said. “He’s a very hard worker. He’s a great motivational team leader with his work ethic, and nobody strives to be the best they can be like him. The other kids really look up to him.”

Gaining experience is what has helped McWilliams grow as a football player.

“I remember as a freshman playing on special teams and stuff, and I think that helped me a lot through all my other years playing the game,” he said. “That got rid of a lot of nerves and stuff by playing with older kids.”

Clark has seen McWilliams evolve throughout his time in high school.

“What I’ve seen him change the most in is his self confidence,” Clark said. “He’s very unselfish, I mean he’s probably the most unselfish kid I’ve ever coached.

“Not only him being a leader, but he’s a very good offensive and defensive lineman. I think he’s got the whole package. He’s got the strength, he’s got the smarts, and what I see is a lot of total domination from him at his spot.”
