Ursuline’s Morgione in state semifinal

MASON — Ursuline junior Greg Morgione is two matches away from being called a state champion.

The Division II singles player defeated Dayton Miami Valley School’s Niyanth Reddy, 6-4, 6-4; and Waverly’s Penn Morrison 7-5, 6-2, to advance to today’s semifinal match against Columbus Wellington School’s Trevor Ball.

Ball defeated John F. Kennedy junior Armand Nannicola, 6-1, 6-1, in a first-round match at Friday’s boys tennis state tournament at the Linder Family Tennis Center.

Chagrin Falls’ Andrew Zimcosky plays Camden Preble Shawnee’s Pierce Elliott in the other semifinal.

Ursuline seniors Austin Arfaras and Luke Tsudia beat Clyde’s Jacob Strudthoff and James Dry, 6-4, 6-1, but lost to Cincinnati Indian Hill’s Tejas and Mack Ellis, 6-0, 6-3.

Ursuline sophomore’s Josh Khavari and Gavin Blacksher beat Ottawa Glandorf’s Carter and Colin Welsh, 6-3, 7-5, but lost to Gahanna Columbus Academy’s Suriya and Rhian Seneviratne, 6-1, 6-1.

Both Irish doubles team were one match away from the state semifinals.

In Division I, Warren G. Harding senior Alex Payiavlas and freshman Anthony Payiavlas lost to Lewis Center Olentangy Orange’s Alex Heiden and Soham Pradhan, 6-2, 6-3.
