Tuesday’s highlights

BASEBALL

Nate Bencetic was 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Hubbard past Girard, 8-1, in a Division II sectional first-round game. Bencetic and Dylan Durkos each had two RBI singles to lead a four-run fifth inning. Today, Hubbard plays Poland in a sectional bracket final.

Harrison Lay hit a two-run single to the shortstop side, scoring runners from second and third base as Jackson-Milton beat St. Thomas Aquinas in a Division IV sectional first-round game. Thursday, the Blue Jays play John F. Kennedy at Warren G. Harding’s field in a sectional bracket final.

Windham pounded out 17 hits and took advantage of nine errors in a 26-0 Division IV sectional first-round shellacking of Richmond Heights. Blake Eye was 3-for-3 with two triples and three RBIs to pace the offense. Bailey Rutherford also added three hits and three RBIs. The Bombers now travel to Maplewood at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Berkshire walked off against Mineral Ridge with a 3-1 victory in a Division III sectional first round matchup. The Rams’ Koby Zupko hit a game-tying home run in the fifth inning to make it 1-1, but the Badgers scored twice in the seventh.

Austintown Fitch put together a pair of four-run innings to move past New Philadelphia, 11-4, in a Division I sectional first-round clash. Lorenzo Russo paced the offense by going 2-for-3 with four RBIs. The Falcons play at Uniontown Lake in a sectional bracket final at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Howland’s Joey Perfette and Luca Massucci each had four hits to power Howland past Mooney, 11-4, in a Division II sectional first round matchup. The Tigers scored four runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to pull away. Howland now plays at top-seeded Canfield at 7 p.m. tonight.

SOFTBALL

Ursuline held on to beat West Branch, 9-7, in a Division II district semifinal at YSU. Emily Holland drove in four for the Irish (25-2), who scored four times in the fourth inning to take a 7-5 lead. They added two runs in the sixth, which proved critical as the third-seeded Warriors scored two in the seventh. Ursuline now plays Poland at 4 p.m. Thursday in the district final at YSU.
