Flashes play on Thursday

The Champion softball program’s amazing run in the Ohio High School Athletic Association postseason continues on Thursday at Firestone Stadium in Akron where the Golden Flashes will be gunning for their third straight Division III state championship.

Champion (28-2) faces Byesville Meadowbrook (18-9) at 12:30 p.m. in a semifinal. Cardington-Lincoln, who Champion beat 9-4 in the 2018 title game, face West Jefferson Thursday at 10 a.m. in the other semifinal.

The state championship game is scheduled Saturday at 10 a.m.

Besides winning the state title the last two seasons, Champion also won it all under coach Cheryl Weaver in 2011, 2012 and 2015. Two more victories this season would give the Golden Flashes six state titles over a nine-year period.

The Mathews baseball team also will play on Thursday, facing Springfield Local at 2 p.m. in a Division IV regional semifinal at Strongsville High School. Attica Seneca East faces Jeromesville Hillsdale at 5 p.m. in the other semifinal. The regional final is scheduled Friday at 5 p.m.

The D-IV regional is new in Strongsville this season after a long run at The Pipe Yard in Lorain. Also new this season is the fact the baseball tournament is a week behind softball.

In previous years, both tournaments began and ended at the same time. This year, baseball’s state tournament is scheduled June 7-9 at Canal Park in Akron.
