Lakeview, Niles claim non-conference wins

LAKEVIEW 76, LIBERTY 49: LIBERTY — Lakeview’s defense kept Liberty in the single digits for two quarters on their way to defeating the Leopards in a non-conference match.

The Bulldogs did this on the back of their strong rebounding, holding a 44-19 edge over the Leopards.

Five players for Lakeview reached double-digits in the win, with Jeff Remmick (15), AJ McClellan (13), Daniel Evans (12), Brendon Kilpatrick (11) and Carter Huff (10) each hitting the mark.

Ezell Brown was one of three double-digit scorers for the Leopards, leading the team with 15. Darrion Williams (12) and Manuel DuBose (11) also put up double figures in the loss.

NILES 75, CHAMPION 71: NILES — Cyler Kane-Johnson scored 34 points as the Red Dragons built a big lead, then held off a furious Champion rally in the non-conference game. Niles (7-7) led 14-13 after one quarter, 39-28 at halftime and 61-42 after three quarters. The Dragons made 12 of 18 free throw tries in the final quarter, including a six-for-six performance by Kane Johnson, who also grabbed 10 rebounds in the game.

Doug Foster added 20 points for Niles and Corbin Foy contributed 10.

Champion (8-6) had balanced scoring led by Nick Stahlman with 16 points. Abe Bayus added 15 and Chase Wheelock and Joe Abramovich scored 14 apiece. The four combined for 25 of Champion’s 29 points in the fourth quarter.

URSULINE 51, GIRARD 46: GIRARD — Ursuline came back from an 18-8 first-quarter deficit to defeat Girard in a non-conference battle.

RJ Clark led the Fighting Irish with 22 points, and Devan Keevey scored 11.

Girard had two double-digit scorers as well with Austin Claussell (15) and Matt Payich (13) each reaching the mark.

ROOTSTOWN 63, NEWTON FALLS 53: NEWTON FALLS — A 20-point third quarter for visiting Rootstown took down Newton Falls in a non-conference matchup Tuesday.

Preston Rapczak led the Tigers with 17 points and Josh Honeycutt scored 13.

Three players scored in the double-digits for the Rovers. Scott Steger scored 16, Adam Whitacre scored 14 and Jack Steger put in 10.

AUSTINTOWN-FiTCH 50, LAKESIDE 49: AUSTINTOWN — The Falcons won a nail-biter over AAC-Red Tier foe Lakeside with three players each scoring 14 points.

Kris Brown, Todd Simons and Tommy Leskovac tied for the team scoring lead in the win.

Brandon Ford led the Dragons, hitting four 3-pointers and scoring 20 points. Ethan Colbert contributed 15 points.
