Hubbard stays perfect, routs Howland

HOWLAND — The Hubbard Eagles soared to a 42-7 victory over the Howland Tigers Friday evening in Howland. After an hourlong weather delay, the Eagles got revenge from last season’s defeat at the hands of the Tigers.

Led by senior quarterback Davion Daniels’ 10 carries for 151 yards and two scores, Hubbard kept its undefeated season alive and improved to 5-0.

“It all started in the summer. Guys were in the weight room,” Daniels said. “So far, we’re having a successful season. We’re 5-0 for a reason, because we work hard.”

It was a shaky start for Daniels when he was picked off by Howland junior William Hines early in the first. Daniels finished 6 of 13 passing for 85 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

On Howland’s first play after the pick, they fumbled the ball right back to Hubbard. Daniels didn’t bother going through the air on this drive. Instead, he kept it on the ground. He broke off a 35-yard run before scoring on a 5-yard scamper to make it 7-0 with 3:56 left in the first.

The Tigers punted and Daniels was back in business. This time he raced down the sideline and dove into the end zone from about five yards out for a 54-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 with 1:51 left in the quarter.

Hubbard forced another punt and quickly moved the ball again. Daniels threw a perfect long bomb pass that would have gone for a 60-yard TD but the receiver let it slip through his hands. Unfazed, Daniels went to the air again and found senior JayQuan Odem for a 40-yard completion. Odem wasn’t finished on the drive. He scored on a 13 yard screen that he completely reversed field on to find his way in.

Howland (0-5) answered and put together its best drive of the game. Senior quarterback Jordan Fronzaglio helped work the ball down the field before finding senior Nathan Barrett for a 29-yard touchdown pass. Barrett made a beautiful grab on a nice pass over the middle to make the score 21-7 with 6:43 left in the half.

The Tiger defense tried to bear down and contain the potent Eagle offense but couldn’t keep Hubbard off the board again before halftime. Daniels found senior receiver Shannon Slovesko on a fourth-and-8 pass to keep the drive alive before senior running back Rafael Morales punched it in from 1 yard out. A penalty moved the extra point try back. On the attempt, the holder Cam Resatar kept the ball and ran it in for 2. With 48 seconds until halftime the score was 29-7 Hubbard. Resatar finished off the half with an interception of Fronzaglio.

Resatar picked off another ball, senior Lukas Mosora had a big quarterback sack, and Morales scored on a pair of 10-yard runs in the second half to help lock up the win.

First year Howland coach, Steve Boyle, who comes from the college ranks, is impressed with Hubbard and is looking for similar success.

“Hubbard is a good team,” Boyle said. “Coming from the collegiate level and trying to develop a program, it’s difficult not being able to recruit kids. The kids that we do have work extremely hard.

“We need to execute a little better. Kids like our nose tackle Logan Gaskill and Keyshawn Busch have good attitudes and give us great leadership.”

The Eagles will get back to work looking to continue on what they’ve accomplished thus far.

“We watch film every week,” Hubbard coach Brian Hoffman said. “We try to make sure we’re doing everything fundamentally sound. We want to fill our gap assignments.

“We’re off to a good start, but there is a very long way to go. We want to execute well, and to play well as a team.”
