Golfers get started with postseason

The Ursuline and Cardinal Mooney boys teams and two individuals from Trumbull County are among the high school golfers who on Monday advanced through sectional tournament action and qualified for the district level next week. (See results, Page 3B)

Bristol sophomore Katie Webb and Girard freshman Dominic Malito both advanced as individuals.

Webb was the fourth individual qualifier out of the Division II girls sectional at Punderson State Park Golf Course in Newbury. She shot a 97, good for a tie for 11th place overall.

The girls Division II district next week is Oct. 2 at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in Canton.

Most of the Division II girls schools in the area will compete Wednesday in the sectional at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Hubbard.

Poland won by 22 strokes in the boys’ Division II sectional that took place at Windmill Lakes Golf Course in Ravenna. The Bulldogs had three of the top four golfers, led by medalist Jake Snyder (79).

Runner-up Ursuline was led by individual runner-up Seamus Chrystal (80) and finished eight strokes ahead of Mooney, which got a fifth-place finish from Keegan Butler (84). The Cardinals were 10 strokes in the clear of fourth-place Waterloo in the battle for the third and final qualifying spot.

Malito shot a 91, as did Travis Criblez of Garfield and Tucker Brown of Waterloo. Ian Benoit of Crestwood was the first individual not on a qualifying team with a round of 85, good for sixth place overall.

The trio at 91 went to a playoff for the final two individual positions with Malito and Brown advancing.

The Division II district also will be played at Windmill Lakes on Oct. 2.

The boys Division III sectional is scheduled Wednesday at Riverview Golf Course in Braceville. Division I boys and girls golfers don’t start their postseason play until next week.
