Howland to meet Lakeview; Ridge, Maplewood win

Howland’s Manny Perez and Matt Seem scored in the first half during Tuesday’s Division II Austintown District semifinal against fifth-seeded Poland in boys soccer, 2-0.

The top-seeded Tigers (15-2-1) face second-seeded Lakeview during Saturday’s district final at Niles’ Bo Rein Stadium, starting at 7 p.m.

Lakeview’s Anthony Sylvester had the game’s lone goal as the Bulldogs made the first-half lead hold against third-seeded South Range, 1-0, on Tuesday at Don Richards Memorial Stadium.

Maplewood’s Tommy Rink hit his second goal in double overtime as the second-seeded Rockets advance to the Division III Kent District final over Kirtland, 3-2, in Tuesday’s district semifinal at Maplewood High School.

Jared Bedlion had the other goal for the Rockets (17-1), who plays Rootstown Saturday at 5 p.m., at Girard High School in the district final.

Fourth-seeded Champion lost in the other district semifinal to top-seeded Rootstown, 3-0. The Rovers had a 13 to 1 advantage on Champion for shots on goal.

Andrew Russell had seven saves for the Golden Flashes.

In a Division III Austintown District semifinal, second-seeded Mineral Ridge got past third-seeded Crestview in a game that had all second-half scoring. Gonzalo Arnes scored 4 minutes into the final 40 minutes. Arnes added the deciding goal 4 minutes later.

The Rams, who gave up an upper 90 shot with 10 minutes remaining, take on top-seeded United during Saturday’s district final at Canfield High School, starting at 5 p.m.


Boardman and Canfield both fell in Division I Uniontown District semifinal matchups Tuesday.

Fifth-seeded Boardman was swept by top-seeded Massillon Jackson in three sets, while second-seeded Canfield squandered a two-set lead as third-seeded North Canton Hoover rallied in the final three sets.
