Sound off!

Warren is becoming a war zone. Daylight shootings; library across from city hall repeatedly vandalized. But city offices remain locked up with no public access, and when the newspaper calls, neither the safety service director nor the police chief are available for comment. Both are apparently hiding, hoping it will all go away. Wake up Warren! You deserve better!

Now we can see why COVID-19 numbers are so high. How many tested positive but really don’t have it? Obviously our governor. Yet he wants to have a cotton swab shoved up the noses of student-athletes weekly. The tests aren’t 100 percent reliable. The governor expects the school system to pick up the tab for this, estimated to run about $70,000 monthly. Somebody is making lots of money on these tests. It would be interesting to see who owns stock in these companies. Don’t believe the numbers!

I am an elder at high risk during this pandemic. I was raised to obey rules. I have isolated 80 percent of the time. I have had to enter some businesses for necessary items where I encountered some very rude, self-centered people. They do not abide by social distancing nor pay attention to one-way aisle markings and space designations in the checkout lines. What is it they don’t get? Or do they just think they are invincible? How shameful during this critical time.

Two cities have defunded police, Ferguson and Baltimore. Under Barack Obama and Loretta Lynch, they curtailed their police budgets and imposed extreme limits on the force they can use. They stopped policing in black neighborhoods. Are these cities safer? Not by a long-shot — 342 homicides in Baltimore and 349 in Ferguson during 2019. All they do now is pick up dead bodies. Under Biden you will have misery and Hell on earth if elected.

There are about 12 million residents in Ohio and more than 3,600 deaths from the virus. That is about 1 death per 3,000 of our population. Quit fear mongering and use common sense. Respect the virus for what it is. Respect each other’s views. Take all politics out and leave it out. Let’s take Jesus’ advice: Love your enemies and bless them that curse you.

OHSAA’s proposal is full of red flags. How can you keep 50 to 80 kids 6 feet apart on the sideline, in the locker room or on buses? Or 22 kids in full contact on the field? Will they play in front of empty stands? What about the band? California and Washington have moved the season to the spring. Moving baseball to the fall is a better candidate for social distancing and wearing masks with less risk of contact. Give science a chance for a vaccine before the spring.

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts sided with the court’s liberal wing in a 5-4 decision on July 24 that rejected a Nevada church’s request to block the state government from enforcing a cap on attendance at religious services, even though Nevada doesn’t have a problem with limiting crowds at casinos. This isn’t the first time Roberts leaned left. Remember his gay marriage vote? What a disappointment he turned out to be.

Donald Trump said the reason we have so many COVID-19 cases is because we test too much. He’s already had two rallies where he’s fed his supporters the virus. His only concern is re-election, not people’s lives. Now it looks like he may lose in November, and he’s saying vote by mail is rigged. That’s because his buddy Putin can’t get into our mailboxes. There were 32 million mail-in votes in 2016, and no fraud was found. He’s now accusing Obama of being a traitor.

People who approve of kneeling during the national anthem say it is not a protest against the flag but a protest against police brutality. The same people say it is offensive to name athletic teams after Native Americans and it must stop. Kneeling while playing the national anthem is offensive to millions of Americans. Why don’t they use the same logic to oppose kneeling? There are many more appropriate ways to protest.
