It is time to pray

DEAR EDITOR:

What is happening to America?

Our country began with these words 240 years ago: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Most, if not all, of the Founding Fathers were men of God. They believed in God, and they believed they could not create and sustain this country without his providence. Today, we have removed God, the creator, from everything possible in our nation.

Over the past generation, the number of people attending church has decreased dramatically, and this trend has not stopped. Why? There are probably many reasons. For one, we humans have a real propensity for patting ourselves on the back and taking credit for the material things we have acquired. The more we have, the less we realize that it all comes from God. This causes us to believe that we don’t need God.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Look at the collapse of the American family unit, the basic structure of society. Look at the mammoth drug problem we have and the skyrocketing rate of suicide. Mental health issues are now one of the biggest problems America faces. God might ask, “How is that working for you?”

So is it possible to reverse this trend? Is it possible to make America a kinder, gentler nation, one that helps their neighbor and lives by Jesus’ golden rule: Matthew 7:12: “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them.”

The entire message of Christ’s life is summed up in two simple commands: Love the Lord your God with all your being and your neighbor as yourself. I don’t understand why anyone would not want to totally embrace Jesus’ directive for us? Can you imagine a world where this was everyone’s “Mission Statement”? It would be heaven on earth here!

We just need to ask ourselves this question in every life circumstance and situation, “What does love require of me?” The answer will change not only America, but the entire world.

Finally, listen to what God told the Jewish people after one of the many times they turned their backs on Him and would not follow His commandments: 2 Chronicles 7:14 King James Version tells us, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

America, it is time to pray!
