Do your part to end this health crisis now

DEAR EDITOR:

As we live through this crisis, we should be asking ourselves what we can do to help stem the tide of the COVID-19 pandemic and realize that this could be a short-term issue if we all do our part by staying separated from the general population and not gathering in groups.

Self-quarantine for the most part. Or, if we choose to ignore the guidelines, this health issue could smolder for months causing long-term decline in our country and world.

There are several people who are quick to blame the elected leaders for not taking faster action, not having enough supplies, not closing the borders sooner, not having a health care system in place to solve this issue and many other complaints on the handling of this outbreak.

It would be nice to have a crystal ball to see everything before it happens, but nobody knows the future. As you know, hindsight is always 20/20. We can take the pessimistic view by lamenting, complaining, ignoring and promoting fear, or we can face this challenge with optimistic point of view.

In order to face an issue optimistically, we first have to ask ourselves what we have control of. In this case we have control of staying in place so that the COVID-19 will peak and then decline within weeks. We have the ability to call and video conference with our family and neighbors to check on their wellbeing, as well as socialize with them.

We have the ability to spend time with our families and make lasting positive memories. We have the time now to complete projects that have been set aside for a rainy day.

We can make the best out of a bad situation if we just put forth the effort to change what we can and not focus on what we can’t change. It’s easy to see all the negatives, such as the stock market tumbling, job losses, businesses closing and milestone events such as high school graduations, school plays, proms and weddings, canceled.

The biggest thing we can change is our mind.

We must realize this is temporary and will pass. The stock market will return, businesses will re-open, jobs will be added, and life will return to normal. Every one of us has the power to make this occur sooner than later if we all do our part by staying out of public places as much as possible, washing our hands often, remaining calm and positive.

We need to realize that we could be carrying this virus inside for days and spreading it to those who will die from it, so let’s all do our part and end this now.
