How we should treat least of our brethren

DEAR EDITOR:

History is replete with polities building walls to keep out perceived “riff raff” — Hadrian’s Wall, the Great Wall of China, the Berlin Wall (to keep in), Maginot Line, Palestinian Wall. Each one was easily climbed over, dug under or circumvented.

Why not invest in the causes of Central Americans — the men, women and children seeking refuge? The Latin Fundias, the United Fruit Company, American and European corporations, the arms sales to and support of dictators by the U.S. government have impoverished the peoples of these countries. Our vice president and the majority of Americans claim to be Christians. Christian tenants are to help others, especially the less fortunate. Instead of building of walls, let’s build bridges and (1) stop supporting exploiters and (2) invest in these countries that will help people, not corporations.

We are all in this world together. We cannot solve world’s problems with walls, soldiers and exploitation. Let’s live up to our creed. How we treat the least of our brethren is our legacy, not greed and gasing women and children seeking basic living conditions.
