Proper driving can save lives of self and others

DEAR EDITOR:

It is very important for motorists to drive safely.

First, drivers must take care of their vehicles.

If a vehicle is not properly maintained, it may be dangerous. Drivers should regularly check things like the tires’ condition and inflation and the brakes.

Windows should be cleaned inside and outside.

Drivers should drive only when fit to do so. If physically or mentally unwell, drivers are a danger to others and self. Drivers need to monitor medication and alcohol intake and never use drugs while driving. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), 11.8 million people drove under the influence of illicit drugs in the past year.

Drivers also need to pay close attention when driving, not texting and driving and not being distracted. According to the CDC Injury Center, more than 1,000 people are injured by distracted driving every day and nine are killed.

Drivers also must be sure to learn and obey traffic laws, wear seatbelts, drive the speed limit and be mindful of traffic signs. By wearing a seatbelt alone, the rate of injury or death in collisions is cut by 45 percent. Proper driving can save lives.
