We can’t afford Mathews bond issue

DEAR EDITOR:

Here we go again. Mathews voters have turned down a new school complex three times because we cannot afford it. How many times do the voters have to say “no” before Superintendent Lew Lowery and the school board accept it.

They must think they can wear us down and we will give in. The problem is, we still have no more money than we did before.

What is amazing is Mr. Lowery and the board keep asking the voters for more money without showing where the money is from — state income tax, state lottery tax and the casino tax. What do they use it for?

When the voters went door to door and got a state income tax passed it was to solve our money problems for the future. What a joke that was.

Had the school board and Mr. Lowery kept their word and used the last bond issue to improve the buildings instead of buying land the voters didn’t OK, the buildings would be in better condition.

I think it is time they accept our “no” and start looking to make Baker a high school and Currie an elementary school. If not, then plan to separate the school four ways, sending the students to other schools.

I would like to set Mr. Lowery straight. We don’t all own 50 plus acres of land. I own 0.5 acre, pay $3,000 a year property tax on an income of $1,300, and over $2,000 of that goes to the school. Tell me where do I get another $200+ dollars a year for the new school. My home insurance and hospitalization have both gone up this year without a raise in my income.

I’m asking the Fowler and Vienna voters to vote “no” on May 2, 2017, just so I don’t lose my home.
