Red Cross needs blood donations most desperately

Despite the drumbeat of month-after-month pleas for blood donors to help the American Red Cross meet a desperate need, the organization’s supply has actually plummeted more than 25%. Consider what that means for those who rely on the Red Cross to supply blood and blood products that could save their lives.

“The American Red Cross is experiencing an emergency blood shortage as the nation faces dangerous levels of heat and people head out for final summer travel plans,” the organization said Monday. “Since July 1, the Red Cross national blood supply has fallen by more than 25%, and blood donors of all types, especially those with type O blood, are urged to give as soon as possible to help patients receive lifesaving medical care.”

What does the heat really have to do with anything? It has affected more than 100 blood drives over the past month. Couple that with summer travel and other disruptions to potential donors’ routines, and the situation is critical.

There are plenty of local opportunities to help make up this shortfall. Find one that works for you, here: https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/find-drive

And spread the word.

“It’s critical hospitals have both type O positive and O negative blood ready to go for patients in the most life-threatening situations,” said Dr. Eric Gehrie, executive physician director for the Red Cross. “Type O is especially important for victims of accidents and other trauma who are receiving emergency treatment. Now is the time for donors of all blood types to give and ensure hospital shelves can be restocked before any impact to patient care.”

Look for a time to give (especially if you have type O blood), look for ways to share the need, and encourage those who may be a bit squeamish to go make a difference. It’s truly time to roll up our sleeves.
