Orchids and onions

• ORCHID: To Inspiring Minds youth organization marking its 16th year of helping teens and children in Trumbull County. The group held its annual fundraising gala Thursday at Kent State University at Trumbull, attended by more than 500 people. The event is intended to unite students and local supporters. Inspiring Minds continues to provide an amazing service with its after-school and summer enrichment programs for underserved area youth. Bravo to all involved, including donors to the program!

• ORCHID: To Hubbard area’s Eagle Joint Fire District for swiftly heading off the risk of having no emergency ambulance service after a private company announced it was pulling out next month. The fire district acted quickly to purchase two used ambulances at $63,000 and arranged to rent an ambulance from the Mecca Fire Department in the interim. The board also approved 12 part-time paramedics and emergency medical service staff for the district to be covered around the clock. That’s an incredible amount of work completed at lightning pace. Who says government always moves at a snail’s pace?

• ONION: To those who have no regard for how much their littering and other careless acts affect the area’s wildlife and riverways. Friends of the Mahoning River, once again, will do a riverside cleanup today at the site of the Girard dam in honor of World Fish Migration Day. We support the very impactful work this group does to ensure our local waterways are kept free of debris. It’s a shame volunteers must spend so much time cleaning up after people who selfishly toss their trash.

• ORCHID: To Warren City Schools for successfully seeking a $234,090 grant from the Ohio Department of Education’s school bus purchase program to purchase three new buses. The city schools board of education recently approved purchase of three buses from Myers Equipment. Kudos for realizing the value in applying for grants like this to help stretch the local tax dollars and keep equipment in tip-top shape.

• ORCHID: To the organizers and participants at this year’s Tri-County Heart Walk, being held this morning at Wean Park in Youngstown. Opening ceremonies begin at 9:15 a.m. and the walk at 9:30 a.m. Orchid also to this year’s two 7-year-old Heart Heroes, Harper Warchol and Steven Tsikour, and to their families, along with all the local heart survivors. Today’s event is sure be a good one, intended to reinvigorate heart-healthy lifestyles and raise funds for fighting heart disease.
