Conduct all business out in the open

Ohio Supreme Court members should not have had to issue the unanimous ruling they did last week. That they were required to do so should anger Buckeye State residents.

Ruling in a lawsuit filed by a community newspaper in Cuyahoga County, justices ordered that government bodies cannot conduct business through secret ballots. The issue involved action taken by Bratenahl Village Council, which elected a president pro tempore by secret ballot.

Local government officials do too much behind closed doors. It happens all the time, in various ways.

Courts have ruled the public has a right to know how our business is handled by municipal councils, county commissions, school boards, etc. It is not as if local officials are not aware of their duties in that regard.

So why do so many of them continue to do things behind our backs?
