Orchids and onions

• ORCHID: To Trumbull County commissioners for keeping pressure on consulting company GeoStar to ensure it makes good on its promise to find at least $62,000 worth of savings by auditing county spending. So far, those savings have fallen short, and now the company is agreeing to pay back $10,000 of the $42,000 paid by the county. Commissioners aren’t letting up, though, and plan to explore more options for the return of even more of the taxpayers’ investment.

• ORCHID: To Warren City Council for agreeing to spend another $600,000 for additional road improvements this year. That means repairs focusing on 22 additional city roads. That’s good use of the funds generated by the city’s 0.5 percent income tax increase passed in 2016.

• ONION: After showing progress last year in the fight against the opioid crisis, statistics now are showing that drug overdose rates are increasing again, with Trumbull County on track to match record accidental overdose deaths in 2017. Experts say fentanyl is being mixed with many street drugs, and now amphetamine use is on the rise, too.

• ORCHID: To all the planners and organizers in this year’s events marking the 75th anniversary of Mosquito Lake Dam. The reservoir adds enormous economic and recreational value to our area. Celebrating the anniversary of its creation is a worthy cause.

• ORCHID: To seventh- and eighth-graders in Marissa DeFrancesco’s classes at Lakeview Middle School, for spending much time this spring constructing an outdoor garden at their new PK-8 school. The kids built eight garden boxes, filled them with soil and then planted. Orchid also to GPD Foundation of Akron who provided the grant funds for the project.
