Dedication to local history earns praise

Congratulations are in order for the Village of Orangeville that in recent weeks marked its 150th year.

And further kudos go to organizers, donors, volunteers and village leaders who marked the momentous occasion with dedication of a newly created historical center there.

The new center will be open 1 to 4 p.m. the fourth Sunday of each month, March to November, at the fire station, 44 High St.

Established in 1868, the village now has a large room showcasing memorabilia, photos, newspaper clippings and other items. It’s this type of preservation of local history that we see as critically important for all residents, but especially for our area’s youth.

Local historian Jim Wade was correct when he pointed out the vast amounts of local history in town with schools, hotels, motels, businesses and community now is available for visitors to learn from — all in one room.

Orangeville United Methodist Church Pastor Ronald McIlvaine recognized those who took the time and effort to donate their items. He also was correct.

Now many of the items on display can be enjoyed by Orangeville and Trumbull County residents. The items were donated by local residents, who apparently also understood their sentimental and educational value.

That is often even more important than physical, cash value.
