Orchids and Onions

n ORCHID: To the Cortland family of a deceased local man who discovered two grenades in the items he left behind. The quick-thinking family recognized the potential danger and took the appropriate fast action by calling police and, ultimately, the Youngstown Bomb Squad. All ended safely.

n ONION: To Mahoning Valley Sanitary District Board members for moving forward with action to give back millions of dollars to its two member cities, Niles and Youngstown, before consulting with the court of jurisdiction, a two-judge panel that oversees financial issues at the water district. The judges now are calling for re-examination of the MVSD’s decision. What was the rush to approve this action? After all, when does government ever move quickly?

n ORCHID: To the lady that for several years has been picking up litter every Sunday, weather permitting, on North Road. She starts around 6:30 a.m. and picks up trash between East Market and Atlantic streets. (submitted by a reader)

n ONION: To Girard City Council and its safety committee for failing to respond to requests from neighboring Liberty Township regarding a possible merger into a joint fire district. If they have decided not to consider the merger, the simple courtesy of a response to explain their thoughts and reasoning shouldn’t be too much to ask.
