Orchids and Onions

ORCHID: To Newton Falls police Sgt. Brian Foor, late Austintown firefighter John R. Fritz and Rootstown resident Tom Smith, who were honored this week with 2016 Ohio Fire Service Hall of Fame awards.

ORCHID: To the Warren Neighborhood Initiative and Community Concerned Citizens II, with the help of Councilwoman Cheryl Saffold, for their plan to improve Warren’s Quinby Park for children and adults in the neighborhood.

ONION: To Warren Mayor Doug Franklin, who is facing a looming financial crisis and impending income tax increase vote but decided this week to spend time campaigning for presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Franklin and other Ohio mayors, participated in a press conference Thursday expressing support for the Democratic nominee.

ORCHID: To organizers and participants in the 10th annual Buddy Walk held recently in Perkins Park to raise awareness and money for Down syndrome. The event has raised more than $20,000 annually.

ORCHID: To the Fine Arts Council, Trumbull County Historical Society, Trumbull 100, the Raymond John Wean Foundation and the many other local businesses, organizations and individuals who got involved to make this weekend’s Warren Homecoming celebration a success.

Orchids and Onions

ORCHID: To Cardinal Mooney kicker Lizzie Philibin, who last week became the first female to play for the Cardinals. She split the uprights with two PATs. Orchid, also, to assistant coach Chris Amill who took note of her potential and, apparently undaunted by her gender, invited her to give it a try.

ORCHID: To Weathersfield Township trustees for being proactive in finding ways to save the township money. After a township administrative assistant resigned, trustees voted this week to combine the work of two administrative assistants to save $36,000 a year.

ONION: To an advocacy group for sexual abuse victims in the Catholic church for its public criticism of the settlement reached between the church and 28 sex abuse victims. The settlement is exactly that – an agreement reached out of court between the parties. If the victims weren’t satisfied, then why accept it?

ORCHID: To Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership for its pursuit and receipt of a USDA grant to study availability of fresh produce and other healthy food to inner-city residents. Access to nutritious food is an important issue that should not be ignored.

ORCHID: To St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Warren for the 9/11 service in which those lost in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks were remembered, and special blessings were offered for the many local police officers and firefighters who attended.

Orchids and Onions

ORCHID: To the National Packard Museum and collector Ed Lozick who willed his rare and valuable 1937 Packard Twelve Coupe Roadster to the Warren museum’s permanent collection. Mr. Lozick died in October, but his will ensured the museum would receive the beautiful automobile.

ORCHID: To the family and friends of Brittany Szwedko, 27, of Cortland who are planning a 5K run at 8 a.m. Sept. 17 at Austintown Township Park. Brittany was struck and killed in February while jogging. Race proceeds will fund a YSU scholarship in Brittany’s name.

ORCHID: To Franklin County Common Pleas Court Judge Kimberly Cocroft for denying a request for a Weathersfield wastewater injection well to be allowed to operate during litigation about the well’s operation. At least 20 small seismic events occurred near the well in 2014. The ruling ensures the well will remain shut down at least until legal arguments occur Nov. 1.

ONION: To local attorney Dennis A. DiMartino who was suspended indefinitely by the Ohio Supreme Court from practicing law. This was the fifth sanction against DiMartino for various acts of misconduct.

ORCHID: To Trumbull Memorial Hospital for its donation of eight upgraded hospital beds to Kent State at Trumbull’s nursing program. The donation marks a significant improvement for the campus nursing lab and for the many students pursuing Bachelor of Science of Nursing degrees there.

Orchids and Onions

ORCHID: To the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 11, AMVETS Post 106 in Niles and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1115 for planning and sponsoring name changes for three Trumbull County bridges in honor of veterans. The bridge on Old Route 82 in Howland will be renamed the Vietnam War Veterans Bridge; a span on East Park Avenue near State Street in Niles will be the Korean War Veterans Bridge; and the West Market Street Bridge in Warren will be the Women Veterans Bridge.

ORCHID: To six area women honored last week – and to all women – who work in nontraditional fields. The event marked the Warren Women’s Equality Celebration. Honorees included Laura Barrett, Ohio Department of Transportation; Gloria Beck, Howland paramedic and firefighter; Sonja Ferenac, Howland EMT and firefighter; Kelly McGilton, Howland firefighter and fire inspector; Valerie Hostutler, Trumbull sheriff’s deputy; and Lt. Col. Genevieve Germaniuk, retired U.S. Army nurse.

ONION: To the Newton Falls Joint Fire District Board for being placed on the Ohio auditor’s “unauditable list,” due to incomplete 2014 and 2015 financial reports and bank reconciliations. The fire district responded that officials know where the records are and are trying to access them. If that’s the case, then why didn’t they provide them in a timely manner when asked in the first place by the state auditor as part of this very routine process?

ORCHID: To the Trumbull County District of the St. Vincent dePaul Society that last week handed out more than 450 backpacks and school supplies to needy local children to ensure students are prepared to start the new school year right.

ORCHID: To a team of volunteers, including many teens, from First Assembly of God Church in Warren, who spent time this summer on a mission trip to help people living in poverty in Florida.
