Gerald R. Shaffer 1935-2025

NILES — Gerald R. “Jerry” Shaffer, 90, was called home to Heaven on Thursday evening, Dec. 4, 2025, surrounded by his family, at St. Joseph Warren Hospital. He is now in the presence of his Savior, worshiping with joy beyond measure, reunited with his beloved wife, who entered into glory on July 30, 2023.

“Jerry” as he was affectionately known, was born Dec. 3, 1935, in Latrobe, Pa., the son of Harry and Lillian Fallacker Shaffer.

He married the former JoAnn Breegle, the love of his life, on June 8, 1957. They met at Lucky Jack’s grocery store in Hempfield, Pa., and together they shared 66 years of marriage and many wonderful memories prior to her passing. After relocating to Niles, they raised three children, Jerry (Lee Ann) Shaffer of West Farmington, John (Valerie) Shaffer of Howland and Luann (Rich) Esbenshade of Girard. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Ryan (Elizabeth) Shaffer, Lauren Shaffer, Kenny (Casey) Shaffer, Joel Shaffer, Lindsey (Gary) Ifft, Hannah Shaffer, Dylan Shaffer, Josh (Andrea) Shaffer and RJ Esbenshade. Additionally, he leaves seven great-grandchildren, Derek, Brett, Emma, Grady, Nina and Vivian Shaffer, and Ocean Ifft.

Jerry worked as a furnace operator for the former Copperweld Steel Corp. for 38 years, making many long-lasting friendships through the years. His wife, JoAnn, retired from the Niles City Schools in 1997.

He was a man of remarkable quiet strength and uncommon generosity, always ready to offer his wisdom, time and skills to anyone who needed him. Whether helping someone navigate a difficult decision or faithfully stepping in to do the work others could not manage, he served with a steady kindness that never sought recognition.

He fully committed his life to Jesus and lived each day with his heart anchored in the hope of Heaven, longing for the moment he would be with his Savior and reunited with his beloved wife.

To all who knew him, Jerry embodied a kindness all his own, unwavering love and a gentle strength that shaped every life he touched. As a father, he offered support that never wavered and a quiet presence that brought comfort and confidence. His gracious spirit, his deep devotion to his family and his faith in the Lord made him truly one of a kind.

Jerry treasured the simple joys of life. He poured his heart into gardening and enjoyed every moment of it. He loved playing games with family, especially card games with his wife. He also enjoyed country music, classic Westerns and nature documentaries. His greatest joy of all was loving and caring for his family.

Private funeral services will be held for Jerry at the Lane Funeral Home Mineral Ridge Chapel, 1350 N. Canfield Niles Road, Mineral Ridge.

He will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife in Pineview Memorial Park Cemetery in Warren.
