Richard A. Begg 1935-2025
HOWLAND — Richard A. Begg, 89, entered into the joy of his Master on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at St. Joseph Warren Hospital.
He was born June 21, 1935, in Hamilton, Massachusetts, the son of Alexander Sr. and Constance Hotchkiss Begg, moving to Ohio in the 1960s.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, Dick earned a bachelor’s degree from Boston University. He worked in quality inspection for Pratt & Whitney for 26 years, then worked in quality control for Thomas Steel Strip Corp. until his retirement in 2000. He was a member of the American Society of Metallurgists and the Mahoning Valley Technical Societies Council.
Dick loved the Lord his God with all his heart and soul and mind (Matthew 22:37). He was a longtime member of Christ Episcopal Church and later became a member of Mecca Community Church. In the 1970s and 1980s, he was active in the Bill Glass Crusades. He was known as the “Preacher Man” who gave invocations at township meetings and loved to hand out Daily Bread devotionals.
Dick was a gifted problem-solver who could fix anything. An avid golfer, he had served as a volunteer firefighter both in Howland and in Massachusetts. He enjoyed making blueberry muffins and giving them away, earning his nickname “The Muffin Man.”
Precious memories of Dick live on with his beloved wife of nearly 63 years, Dianne Perry Begg, whom he married Oct. 19, 1962; two sons, Brian of Cortland and Andrew Begg of Howland; and three grandchildren, Alexander, Machkenzie, and Andrew Begg II.
Preceding him in death are his parents; his son, Richard Begg II; his grandson, Brian Begg II; and a very special nephew and niece, Alexander III and Pamela Begg.
Services will be held at Mecca Community Church at a later date. To honor Dick’s life, do a good deed for someone and remember Dick and his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.
