Newman Longwell Jr. 1941-2025
WARREN — Mr. Newman M. “Dinky” Longwell Jr., 83, died early Monday afternoon, May 26, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, following a brief illness.
“Dinky” as he was affectionately known, was born Oct. 17, 1941, in Hundred, W.Va., a son of Newman Sr. and Virginia Cumberledge Longwell. He was a 1959 graduate of Hundred High School and worked as a crane operator for Heckett in Warren for 40 years before retiring in 2004.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Newman married the former Carolyn R. Hopkins on Dec. 20, 1964. They shared 60 wonderful years of marriage and many happy memories. They did everything together and were like two peas in a pod. She survives him.
He and his wife attended the Evansville Baptist Church in Niles.
He enjoyed nature and deer hunting. His greatest joy was spending time with his beloved family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he dearly loved.
Besides his wife, Newman is survived by three children, Rex (Carla) Longwell of Gillett, Pa., Dean (Nina) Longwell of Warren and Melissa (Richard) Harkins of Mineral Ridge. He also leaves behind five sisters, Arietta Lutz of Sebring, Zarona Butler of Port Charlotte, Florida, Susie (Lynn) Moore of Sebring, Tommy Mackey, Littleton, W.Va., and Michelle Stiles of Punta Gorda, Florida; 10 grandchildren, Rex Jr., Ashley, Zane, Tyler (Kelly), Trevor (Claudia), Tanner, Skyler (Chrissy), Tyler, Alyssa (Dave) and Alexa; six great-grandchildren and a great-granddaughter, soon to be born.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Ida Mae Longwell; and a brother, John Henry Longwell.
Newman’s family would like to extend heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff at St. Elizabeth Health Center for all of the kind and compassionate care given to him.
Funeral services will be at noon Friday, May 30, 2025, at Lane Funeral Home Mineral Ridge Chapel, 1350 N. Canfield Niles Road, Mineral Ridge, with the Rev. A.J. Harris officiating. Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the funeral home.
He will be laid to rest in Kerr Cemetery, Weathersfield Township.
