Robert F. Dietl 1938-2025

WARREN — Robert F. Dietl, a devoted family man, veteran and visionary entrepreneur, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph Warren Hospital on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025, at the age of 86.

Born in Queens, New York, in 1938, to John and Sarah Dietl, Robert grew up with a strong work ethic and a deep sense of purpose. After graduating high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force until 1960.

Following his military service, Robert began his professional journey with New York Telephone, where he quickly demonstrated a talent for leadership and innovation in the telecommunications field.

In 1965, he married Angela Streppone and together they built a loving home and a shared life of dedication and ambition.

Robert’s career took him to United Telephone, first in Mount Vernon, and later, as general manager in Warren. With a keen eye for emerging technology, Robert became a trailblazer in the telecommunications industry, co-founding Advanced Lightwave Communications in 1985. A true pioneer, he recognized the revolutionary potential of fiber optics and worked tirelessly to bring advanced long-distance communication capabilities to Northeastern Ohio. Under his guidance, the company flourished, becoming a beacon of innovation and success. Adapting to shifts in the telecom industry, Advanced Lightwave expanded into the alarm and security sector, ensuring its continued relevance and growth.

After decades of hard work, Robert sold Advanced Lightwave Communications in 2018, leaving behind a legacy of entrepreneurial achievement and a profound impact on the industry. His career was defined by a rare combination of vision, determination and the ability to inspire others.

Above all, Robert was a devoted husband, father and mentor. He and Angela raised four sons, Robert, Jerry, Matthew and James. He took immense pride in their achievements and instilled in them the values of perseverance and integrity.

Robert will be remembered as a man of vision and action, whose contributions shaped an industry and whose love and guidance shaped a family.

Family and friends may visit and pay tribute to Robert noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2025, at Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel, 1884 North Road NE, Warren.

Additional calling hours will be 9 to 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, at St.Teresa of Calcutta Parish-Blessed Sacrament Church, 3020 Reeves Road NE, Warren, OH 44483. A funeral Mass will follow 10 a.m. Monday at the church.

As an option to flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a local diabetes foundation, honoring Robert’s enduring commitment to innovation and community.
