David Joseph Petiya, 1948-2021

WARREN — David Joseph Petiya passed away at the age of 72 Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2021, at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, Colo., from complications following a fall at home.

David was born Nov. 2, 1948, in Warren, to the late Robert J. Petiya and Grace M. Funk Petiya, who had passed just one month before.

He graduated from Warren G. Harding High School where he played football for the Panthers. David went on to graduate from The Ohio State University, with a master’s degree in computer science and programming. He moved to Colorado for work and to enjoy the outdoor life. He met his wife, Nancy Dennis Petiya, and they married on June 29, 1985.

David was active in Boy Scouts when he was young and had attained the highest rank of Eagle Scout. He loved camping, hiking, backpacking and cross-country skiing. In his later years, he suffered with Parkinson’s Disease but was able to play softball with the disabled league. He was well-known for being an environmentalist. While working for Kaiser Permanente Health, he won an award for presenting his company with steps toward supporting a greener environment.

David is survived by his wife, Nancy Petiya of Lakewood, Colo.; his children, Scott Petiya of Lakewood, Colo. and Emily Purslow (Andrew) of Centennial, Colo.; sisters, Rebecca Shimko (Phil) of Warren and Sheryl Lilley (John Leveille) of Cape Coral, Fla.; brother, Richard Petiya of Warren; and many nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Grace Petiya; and a baby sister, Helen Marie.

Family and friends are welcome to send donations to the Mayo Clinic as a tribute to David Joseph Petiya, in support of Parkinson’s Disease Research.

A celebration of David’s life will be held at a later date in Lakewood, Colo.
