Helen M. Balling 1930-2021

CORTLAND — Helen M. Balling, 91, passed away at 11:19 a.m. Sunday, June 6, 2021, in the comfort of her home in Cortland, under the comforting care of hospice.

Helen was born Sunday, Jan. 26, 1930, in Warren, the only daughter of the late Frank and Mary Stacko Guzek Smith. She was a lifelong area resident.

She was a 1948 graduate of St. Mary High School.

Helen married Air Force veteran Maynard Balling on Oct. 3, 1953. The couple raised four children and were married for 64 years.

Helen was a member of St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church, where she was active in the Women’s Auxiliary, quilted and helped with the semiannual rummage sale. She also specialized in cooking pierogis and apple pie, knowledge which she shared with her children, grandchildren and friend, Alyssa. She also enjoyed playing bingo and casino slots.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard; and her son, Senior Airman Mark Balling, who was killed in an aircraft accident in Turkey while serving in the Air Force during the Cold War. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, William and Paul Bernard Smith.

Helen is survived by three children, Joanne (David) Hazel of Cortland, Marie (Mark) Voye of Denton, Texas, and John (Chrysti) of Kimberly, Idaho; and seven grandchildren, Mallory of Texas, Kevin, Keith and Allison, all of Ohio, and Samantha, Steven and Nicole, all of Idaho; and seven great-grandchildren, Ryker, Corbin, Ava Marie, Harper, Piper, Kallen and Ella Mae, all of Idaho.

The family would like to thank the caregivers and friends who have assisted with Helen’s care in recent months, Alyssa, Katie, Kim, Melissa and Mel.

Graveside service will take place noon Monday, June 14, 2021, in All Souls Cemetery.
