John W. McCrae 1945-2020

PERU, Ind. — Senior Master Sergeant John Wilson McCrae, USAF (Ret.), 74, passed away Friday, Jan. 24, 2020, at home, in Peru, Ind.

He was born Sept. 29, 1945, in Gulfport, Miss., the son of Peter and Hazel Johnson McCrae, but spent most of his childhood in Newton Falls.

He served in the U.S. Air Force for 27 years and was stationed at several bases within the United States, including Dover AFB and Grissom AFB, as well as in Korea and Turkey.

He was a Vietnam War veteran and served the United States with honor. Following John’s service, he began work at Western Reman in Peru, Ind.

John is survived by his daughter, Angela (husband, Jesus) McCrae Barazas of Middletown, Ind.; son, Eric (wife, Mia) McCrae of Kissimmee, Fla.; brothers, Robert McCrae of Sturtevant, Wis., Paul (wife, Markey) McCrae of Peru, Ind. and Roy McCrae of Parrish, Fla.; sisters, Barbara McCrae of Warren, Dianne (husband, Trevor) Young of Salem, Donna Auchter of Warren, Melody Victor of Niles and Virginia Bartelt of Lancaster; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Margaret “Peggy” Payne.

John will be missed by many in the community, including his friends at Arby’s and Hallmark and former coworkers at Western Reman in Peru, Ind. John was a member of the local VFW and American Legion Posts. He enjoyed woodworking and was especially proud of his annual Christmas display that featured over 50,000 lights and custom decorations, many of which he made.

A viewing in honor of John’s life will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2020, at Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main St., Peru, Ind.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020, at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, with military honors provided by the Miami County Military Rites Unit.

Burial will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 2020, in Pineview Memorial Park, Warren, with graveside service provided by the American Legion Post 504.

In lieu of flowers, John requested memorial contributions be made to the VFW in Peru, Ind.
