James P. Matteo 1939-2020
NILES — James P. Matteo, 80, passed away Sunday, Jan. 12, 2020, at his residence of complications from Alzheimer’s.
Mr. Matteo was born Feb. 3, 1939, in Youngstown, son to James F. and Vera A. Sheehan Matteo.
He was a 1957 graduate of Niles McKinley High School and was an amateur boxer in 1956 and 1957.
After high school, he honorably served as a corporal in the Marine Corps.
After the Marines, he married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Ann Bailey, on Nov. 18, 1961, and then joined the U.S. Postal Service, where he worked for 41 years before retiring.
He was a member of St. Stephen’s Church and enjoyed golfing, boxing, weightlifting, bowling, football and music, and was a big Seinfeld fan.
He leaves his wife, Phyllis Bailey Matteo; daughters, Tracy Matteo (Paul) Kubicz of Chesapeake,Va., Michelle Matteo (William) Mitten of Winterville, N.C., and Kristy Matteo of Warren; son, James S. (Kimberly) Matteo of Redwood City, Calif.; and granddaughter, Melissa Matteo of California.
Preceding him in death were two siblings, his twin brother, John “Jack” Matteo of California; and sister Verda Calderone of Girard.
Friends may call 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, where James will be honored for his military service.
The family would like to thank the staff of Trumbull Regional Medical Center, Harbor Light Hospice and Galaxy Medical for their compassion and care of Jim. Tracy, Michelle and Jimmy would also like to extend a big thank you to Pat Hoolihan and their sister, Kristy, for never leaving their dad’s side, and going above and beyond in providing the best care for him. They love you!
