Betty Jane Drennen 1922-2020

WARREN — Betty Jane Drennen 97, passed away at 6 p.m. Jan. 11, 2020, at the home of her grandson, Gary Jr., with her family by her side.

She was born in Churchill (Liberty) on May 18, 1922, the only child of Edward and Anna Clemens Balley.

Betty was a graduate of Youngstown City Schools.

She met her husband, Lawrence Drennen, at the roller rink in Youngstown and on July 30, 1945, they were married. They moved to Warren, where they built their life and raised two sons, Gary Sr. and Eddie Drennen. They spent 72 years together before his passing in 2018.

While her husband served in World War II, she worked at Republic Steel, Ohio Lamp and the Ravenna Arsenal.

Betty was a homemaker most of her life, enjoyed caring for her family and helped to raise her grandchildren. When you went to grandma’s house, you would always get a sandwich or a cookie and a pop, and when you left, you would always get a “here too.”

She loved getting together with her girlfriends to paint ceramics, and she had a love of collecting bells.

She and Larry made many trips throughout the U.S., even traveling several times to Hawaii.

Left to carry on her memories are her son, Gary Drennen Sr. of Warren; her grandchildren, Gary Jr. (Adora) Drennen of West Farmington, Holly Rivera, Regina Drennen, Billy (Susan) Drennen, Amy Drennen, Janelle (Chris) Lewis of Cortland and Garrett Kelsh of Warren; her great-grandchildren, John (Kristen) Drennen, Coty Black, Courtney Black, Madison Kagy and her namesake, Alea Jane Drennen; her great-great-grandchildren, Isla and Caden Drennen; and her beloved dog, Mandy Sue.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lawrence; and son Eddie.

Per her wishes, she will be laid to rest next to her husband. No calling hours will be observed.

Special thanks to Harbor light Hospice.

The family requests that material contributions be made to the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSD) Foundation.
