Edna L. Rufener 1932-2019

VERNON — Edna Louise Stevens Rufener, 87, of Vernon Township, passed into the arms of her loving Savior on Saturday morning, Aug. 24, 2019, at Trumbull Regional Medical Center. She fought a long hard battle with cancer.

She was born Jan. 27, 1932, in Wayne, the daughter of George L. and Alice Williams Stevens.

She grew up in Vernon and graduated from Vernon High School.

Louise retired from the Trumbull County Jail, where she was a cook for 10 years. She had also worked at Rexall Drug in Kinsman and Jones Processing in Hartford.

She was a member of the Burghill Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and Bible school, and was in the choir. She also attended Fowler Community Church.

She enjoyed NASCAR racing. She was a fan of Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Dave and Ryan Blaney. She was a fan of the Cleveland Indians. But her favorite pastime was playing cards with her family and hosting family gatherings.

On Sept. 25, 1957, she married Elmer “Ed” Rufener, who preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 1981.

She is survived by her loving companion, Bill Hunkus; daughters, Bonnie Carrier, Donna (Bill) Conner and Debra Kelly, all of Burghill, and Beth (Todd) Wilson of Cortland; sons, Rick (Brenna) Rufener of Houston and William (Beverly) Hunkus of Burghill; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia McPeak of Cortland; and brothers, George L. (Delores) Stevens of Cortland and Harlan (Sandy) Stevens of Zephyr Hills, Fla.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, David Swick and William Rufener; one great-grandchild, Sarah Kirchens; and a sister, Dorothy.

Friends and relatives may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2019, and from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, 2019, at the Fowler Community Church, 4651 state Route 305, Fowler. The funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. Thursday, with Pastor Joel Dickson officiating.

Burial will be in Westview Cemetery, Vernon.
