Bernice Novak 1932-2019
HUBBARD — Bernice “Bernie” Novak, 87, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2019, at home surrounded by her family. “With a heavy heart, we write this tribute to our mother.”
She was born June 28, 1932, the daughter of Andy and Mary Sarisky Horvatovich .
She was a 1950 graduate of Hubbard High School, where she was in the band and had many close friends.
She married Daniel “Don” Novak in 1951 at SS. Peter & Paul Church in Youngstown by the Rev. Roper. They bought a house in 1958 and made Hubbard their home.
Bernie was a homemaker for many years. She raised her children in a time of little means, something her children never knew. The unconditional love and attention she gave her children was overwhelming. She also watched over many of her nieces, nephews and the neighbor’s kids. Everyone loved her cooking and baking. She never missed any of her children’s events as they were growing up and was the president of the Hubbard Football Moms in 1975. Besides family and friends, the two things that she loved most were reading and her Ohio State Buckeyes.
She was the caretaker of her husband, Don, who died in 1989, her father, mother and Aunt Annie for many years. After the death of her husband, she started a very successful small business making slipcovers, through which she paid off her home.
In 1995, her granddaughter, Danielle, was born to Daniel and Paula Kyanko Novak, which brought immense joy to her life. In 2000, she packed up everything she owned, built a new home in Columbus and moved where Danielle lived. She watched over Dani after school every day. She loved her dogs, Charley, Sadie and Gambino. She was loved by all and became “Mom” to everyone in the neighborhood. She returned to Hubbard in 2009 with her family. Bernie always gave while asking for very little for herself. She never complained about anything and she kept a positive attitude about everything.
She is survived by her children, Donna, Barbara and Daniel Jr. Novak, along with her granddaughter, Danielle.
Bernie now joins her husband, Don, mother, father, great-aunt Annie and her sister, Loretta, in the afterlife.
Bernie was truly loved by all and will be sadly missed. “A special thanks to Megan at Dr. Sammorone’s office for her kindness and care.”
Respecting her wishes, there will be no calling hours.
A memorial Mass will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 25, 2019, at St. Patrick Church in Hubbard by the Rev. Mike Swierz.
Professional arrangements were handled by the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel.
