SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Katherine “Chic” Gartland Riffle, 92 years young, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2018, in Springfield, Mo.

Chic was born July 15, 1926, in Monessen, Pa. to Charles Joseph Bender and Elizabeth Loretta Powers.

She attended Charleroi Area High School, graduating in 1944. She worked at Superior Market as a cashier and later at Packard Electric as an assembly worker, both located in Warren.

Chic married Edward Bud Gartland in 1950. They were together until Bud’s death in 1976. She courted and then married James Riffle in 1984. They had a wonderful and happy relationship until Jim passed away in 1997. In 2009, always the adventurer, she met Kenneth Smith on a blind date and they ultimately became partners in life.

Chic volunteered for several years with Hillside Hospital and Trumbull Mobile Meals, which recognized her in 2013 for 25 years of service. She loved playing cards, shopping, serving as usher at Blessed Sacrament Church, cooking and traveling. She once traveled alone to Thailand at age 78 to visit her son, Brian. Most of all, she treasured her family.

Chic had seven children with Bud: Patrick and wife Pat, Kathleen and husband Jim Anderson, Maureen and husband Mick Rogers, Jill and husband Jim Schultz, Bill and wife Fariba, Tim and wife Trish and Brian, Gartlands all.

She is grandmother to nine grandchildren, Chris, Matt, Tiffany, Chris, Liam, Tim, Jake, Sean and Allison; and great-grandmother to five.

Mr. Riffle’s family was an integral part of Chic’s life. His children are James (Carla), John (Alice), Jeanne (Bill) Lynn, Jeff (Margaret), Joan (Tom) Molek and Joe (Alexis). She was embraced as grandmother to Jim’s 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren.

Chic also is survived by Ken and his three devoted and loving children, Sandy (George) Thompson, Karen and Ron (Sandra).

Preceding her in death were Chic’s parents, Charles and Bessie; brothers, Bill and Jack; and sisters Mary, Gen and Shirley.

Chic will be remembered for her ability to face life’s hardships with a smile, grit, hard work and grace.

Chic will be laid to rest with her first husband, Edward, in All Souls Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Warren or the Boys & Girls Club of Springfield, Mo.
