Robert E. Spurk 1932-2018
WARREN — Robert E. Spurk, 85, of Warren, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018, of complications of dementia.
Robert was born in 1932, in Warren, to Raymond and Clara Lane Spurk and was a lifelong resident.
Robert married his high school sweetheart, Irene Sharak, after serving his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
Upon leaving the military, Robert and Irene had a son and daughter and kept very busy by founding his own business, Mahoning Valley Gasket Company. Over the years, Bob, as most knew him, partnered with his brothers, Ray and Bill, to expand the business from gaskets into steel stampings by creating MVG Inc. Aside from being a father and entrepreneur, Bob was president of the Youngstown District Purchasing Management Association and commanding officer of the U.S. Navy Sea Cadets in Youngstown.
Bob spent his childhood and young adulthood making time for his loves of baseball, boxing, tennis and skating. His passion for playing sports led to many years of supporting Cleveland teams and spending time watching games with family and friends. He was a generous man whose unwavering work ethic inspired others and provided the funds necessary to put many relatives through college. He had a few bits of advice that he credits for his youthful outlook — “Take care of your teeth, get a good education and laugh as much as possible with the people you love.”
Bob is survived by his two children, Gregg (Caroline) of Beloit and Denise (John) Conley of Fairlawn; his brother, William (Joann) Spurk of Champion; and his sisters, Rose Smith of Florida and Delores “Toots” (Ken) Vesey of Champion. He also is survived by his grandchildren, Becky (Jeremy) Brown, Matt (Lori) Spurk, Annette (Blake) Mabry, Colleen (David) Kaminsky and Meredith Hall. Bob also leaves behind three great-grandchildren, Taylor, Joelle and Finn. He also will be remembered by his extended family — the Hovanecs, the Devines and the Sharaks.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Irene; his brothers, Ray (Ethel) and Jack (Marie) Spurk; his sister, Dorothy (Tony) Naples; and his grandson, David Spurk.
