Anthony Zone 1931-2018

YOUNGSTOWN — Anthony Zone, 87, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, May 6, 2018, at Humility House in Austintown.

Anthony, who was known to all as “Tony,” and also to his family and friends as “Spike,” was born April 1, 1931, in Youngstown, a son of the late Tony and Antonette Vechiarella Zone, and was a lifelong resident of the city’s Smokey Hollow neighborhood.

Tony was a graduate of The Rayen School, where he played varsity football. Eager to serve his country, Tony enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, and was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the 1st Division, 7th Marines, 1st Battalion, Weapons Company. On Dec. 24, 1952, Tony was wounded in battle, earning the Purple Heart. He also earned the Korean War Service Medal, the National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal for his service.

Tony worked for 31 years for General Motors at the Lordstown Plant. Elected to serve as vice president of UAW No. 1112, and later as president, Tony was very involved in the UAW, and also served on many committees during his working years. A dedicated worker and employee advocate, Tony made his work at the plant and with the union his life.

Tony was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica in Youngstown.

He leaves several nephews, a niece and many close cousins.

Besides his parents, two sisters, Sue Marie Zone and Stella A. Zone; and two brothers, Pio and Frank Zone, are deceased.

Family and friends may call 9 to 9:50 a.m. Thursday, May 10, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica, on Via Mount Carmel Way in Youngstown, where at 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Committal services with full military honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown.

Tony’s family sends special thanks to the staff of Humility House for the excellent care provided to Tony during his stay.
