Alice M. Mullen 1920-2018

WARREN — Alice Mary Mullen, 97, passed away peacefully in her sleep of natural causes on Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at Community Skilled Health Care Center in Warren.

She was born Nov. 9, 1920, in Niles, the daughter of Frederick “Fred” and Bessie Holmes. Her father died when she was very young and she was raised by her beloved mother and stepfather, John Harrold.

She married Jack L. Mullen Sr. on May 1, 1942, and they had two sons, Jack and Robert, and a daughter, Nancy.

Alice worked at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in the dietary department for 26 years. Her friendly smile and respectful disposition will be remembered by many patients whom, while delivering meal trays for part of her career, she helped with their menus and in ordering that second cup of coffee in the morning.

Alice was a Cub Scout Den mother, Girl Scout Brownie leader and a schoolroom mother during her childrens’ early school days at Tod Avenue Elementary School, and during those days worked in the school’s cafeteria. She was always a hard worker. She enjoyed watching her children play baseball, fish as well as participate in other sports and school activities. She and her husband often hosted baseball and basketball games in the family’s backyard endearing herself to her children’s teen-aged friends who called her “Mrs. M.”

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Warren for many years, where she belonged to the Fidelis Circle.

Alice enjoyed traveling with family, word puzzles, solitaire, casinos, Cleveland Indians baseball, and good food, but most of all being around family and friends. She was also an excellent baker and often blessed family and friends with her specialties: kolache, cream puffs, doll and lamb cakes, and her wonderful pies and jellos.

Alice is survived by sons, Jack (Carol) Mullen of Warren, Robert (Janet) Mullen of Sequim, Wash., and daughter, Nancy Lowery of Warren; five grandchildren, April (Kevin) Williams of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Jack (Beth Tropman) Mullen of Estes Park, Colo., Thomas (Debra Humphreys) Mullen of Indianapolis, Andrew Mullen of Tempe, Ariz., and Erin (Clinton) Weber of West Farmington; and five great-grandchildren, Ava, Bella and Cooper Williams of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Emma Mullen of Mesa, Ariz., and Evan Lowery of West Farmington. She also leaves behind her beloved nieces and nephews as well as her many friends, and touched everyone who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three brothers and their wives, Edward “Ned” (Esther), John “Jack” (Peg) and Frank (Julia); and two sisters and their husbands, Virginia (Joseph) Geidner and Helen (Bill) Cooney.

She was always thoughtful and tried to help those who needed help; she will be missed and loved by all.

A memorial service for family, friends and acquaintances will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home in Warren, with the family receiving friends one hour prior to the service at 10 a.m. The Rev. James Dittmar will officiate.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Community Skilled Health Care Center for their loving care. Alice was funny and witty and joked with the staff right up until her death.
