North Royalton man arrested following Warren pursuit
WARREN — A North Royalton man accused of leading several Warren officers on a pursuit that required the use of law enforcement devices is set to appear back in court early next week.
Alexander Solorzano Benavides, 22, pleaded not guilty in Warren Municipal Court on Tuesday to charges of failure to comply with a police officer, improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle and possession of criminal tools.
The charges stem from a Monday traffic stop after an officer on routine patrol noticed a Mercedes disregarding a traffic light at West Market Street and Tod Avenue SW and then accelerated east at a high rate of speed, according to a police report. The driver was later identified as Solorzano Benavides,
The report states that other officers joined the pursuit as Solorzano Benavides continued on Market Street, making multiple turns along the way until moving north on Central Parkway SE.
The report states that a second officer set his cruiser up ahead and deployed stop sticks, a triangular device designed to safely end vehicle pursuits by puncturing tires to deflate them, rather than causing a blowout.
Despite his vehicle’s tires becoming entangled by the device, Solorzano Benavides turned onto East Market Street, stopping near Trumbull Avenue SE, with the officer noting that he was unable to see his vehicle’s registration because of a tinted license plate cover, the report states.
Officers took Solorzano Benavides into custody and a search of his vehicle revealed a loaded rifle on the back seat’s floorboard.
The report states the officers inspected his license plate, which they learned had a remote with an on and off button to block out the plate’s numbers. The plate cover and rifle were seized as evidence.
Court records show Solorzano Benavides was released Tuesday on bond. He’s set to appear back in court on Monday.
