Cortland to discuss safety-service complex at today’s work session
CORTLAND — City Council will have a meeting Feb. 19 to discuss the proposed safety-service complex.
“We will be discussing the location of the safety-service complex, and potentially scaling it back, as the price has gone up from what we originally thought,” said council president John Picuri.
Current estimates for the project are approximately $12 million, Picuri said. The session will be a council work session, meaning no votes are scheduled to take place, but the public is invited to offer comments and opinions on the project.
In other business, council:
• Tabled a request to advertise for bids for the Cortland Outdoor Education and Event Space project. Council members said they weren’t sure which of the stakeholder parties were ultimately responsible for the design, payment and decision making on the project, and if the city is required to bid out the project or if it is the responsibility of another public entity. Mayor Dierdre Petrosky noted funding for the project expires June 30.
• Decided to advertise for bids for the West Main Street boat ramp improvements / Mosquito Lake Park improvement project. The city will be responsible for running water service lines to the project, which is on land under the control of ODNR and the Army Corps of Engineers.
• Gave the OK to the police chief to buy a new Ford Police Interceptor for the police department, and to get all necessary outfitting and accessories installed. Council approved the purchase of $65,000 for the vehicle and equipment through the state purchasing program. Police Chief David Morris said another $10,000 or so will be needed to fully outfit the vehicle, but a portion of extra purchase is covered by grants. The new cruiser, which will go into service in the last three months of the year, will replace a vehicle bought in 2019.
• Approved placing a renewal levy on the May primary ballot. The general expenses levy, which last appeared before voters five years ago, will raise about $260,000 for the city.
