Youngstown man to appear in court on menacing, panic charges
LIBERTY — A Youngstown man is set to make a pretrial appearance in court Dec. 10, after his alleged actions led to a hospital being temporarily locked down.
Kenneth Lawrence, 23, pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated menacing and inducing panic in Girard Municipal Court last week.
According to a Nov. 25 police report, officers were called to Belmont Pines in reference to threats and an unwanted person, being told by dispatchers that a man — later identified as Lawrence — was attempting to retrieve property and was causing a disturbance.
Officers were also told that Lawrence allegedly threatened a woman, an ex-girlfriend and employee, telling her he would “shoot her in the face,” according to the report, and while en route, they were told he was in the vestibule area and still yelling at the woman through secured doors.
Upon arriving at the same time as one of Lawrence’s family members, who had a conversation with Lawrence in the vestibule and showed his hands to be empty of any firearms, the officer entered and detained him, escorting Lawrence out of the building.
The report states Lawrence told the officer that he was at the hospital to retrieve items from the woman, who had his charger and Instagram and Facebook passwords on her phone.
Upon returning to the vestibule, the officer spoke with the woman, who said Lawrence was an ex-boyfriend from several years ago — a relationship that had happened when she was still a juvenile, according to the report.
The woman said she had a protection order against Lawrence, but LEADS showed there was no active order in place. The woman said the hospital’s front desk told her that her child’s father was there and was requesting to speak with her, telling officers she was concerned, as her child was with their father while she was working, according to the report.
However, upon approaching the doorway, she saw Lawrence instead, confirming that they never had a child together, but she had received a text from an unknown number suspected to be Lawrence.
The report states the woman said she entered the vestibule to speak with Lawrence, noting him to have an unknown item in his hand, and he allegedly questioned her about her sexual orientation and relations.
The report states the woman confirmed to officers that Lawrence had allegedly threatened to “hurt her right now,” posturing with his hands in his pants and waistband — adding that she believed the threat to be credible.
The woman told officers that, upon the protection order expiring — which was placed after Lawrence destroyed property while she was a juvenile — he would make random contact with her, according to the report. The report states that Lawrence became obsessive after her child was born, and that she moved residences, changed jobs and changed vehicles on separate occasions.
A witness provided a statement to officers, telling them Lawrence had told the woman he would shoot her in the face and that she had asked Lawrence to leave multiple times.
The witness confirmed that, due to Lawrence’s posturing and believing he was armed, the building was placed under lockdown, and law enforcement was called, according to the report.
