Man arrested in Warren after motel stabbing

WARREN — Bond was set at $250,000 for a Campbell man arrested Saturday in Warren in connection with a stabbing at the Riverview Motel that left another man injured.

Troy McGinnis, 37, of Fifth Street, Campbell, pleaded not guilty Monday in Warren Municipal Court before Judge Natasha K. Natale to one count of felonious assault, a second-degree felony, following the attack at the motel, 3060 Parkman Road NW, near Lovers Lane NW. McGinnis was issued a no-contact order for the victim and for McGinnis to stay away from the motel. His next court appearance is set Thursday, court records show..

According to a Warren police report, officers responded to reports of a stabbing around 4:04 p.m. Saturday, and found the victim, Charles Edwards Krause, with at least five stab wounds to his chest, left arm, left upper leg and left buttock. The injuries were deemed non-life-threatening, and Krause was transported to St. Joseph Warren Hospital for treatment, the police report states.

The victim told officers the incident stemmed from a dispute with a man over a dog for which they had exchanged money. The victim said the man came to his motel room to reclaim the dog, leading to an argument. When the victim attempted to walk past McGinnis, he was struck, and after striking back, the man allegedly stabbed him multiple times, according to the police report. The victim, who appeared to be in shock, could not provide a detailed description of the man’s clothing.

Security footage from the motel showed the man leaving the crime scene and briefly entering another room at the motel before departing. A tip from an unknown caller later directed police to a nearby gas station, where officers found the man crouched at the northwest corner of the business. He was wearing a black T-shirt with white lettering, a black winter cap, a blue headwrap, and carrying a backpack with a black hooded sweatshirt wrapped around it, police said.

Inside the backpack, officers recovered a large machete, a bolt cutter, a baseball bat, binoculars, female jewelry, two watches, drug paraphernalia, and a motel key. A black folding pocket knife with a 3-inch silver blade, believed to be the weapon used in the assault, was found in a pair of shorts inside the backpack. The knife appeared recently cleaned with an oily film on the blade, according to the report. The knife was collected for DNA evidence and secured by police.

McGinnis was taken to the Warren Police Department for questioning by a detective before being transported to the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office jail and booked on the felonious assault charge.
